OUR JOURNEY

For the last decade, we have been pioneering robotic autonomy in challenging environments

The team has been actively involved and excelling in some of the most significant and innovative DoD initiatives in Field Autonomy. These include the DARPA SubT Challenge, DARPA RACER, SOCOM multi-robot autonomy, NASA's Mars Helicopter, and many others.

2016-2018

From the search for life in space to improving life on earth.

In 2016, our team began a new era for the search for life in planetary subsurfaces voids with highly autonomous systems, charting new frontiers in space exploration. We embarked on the NASA BRAILLE Project, exploring geologic and biologic aspects of lava tube caves, developing effective strategies for cave exploration.

We developed first-of-its-kind Al and robot autonomy solutions to reach and navigate within caves without any satellite information or prior map. Using Lava Beds National Monument as the Mars-analog on arth, not only our work advanced scientific knowledge but also paved the way for groundbreaking discoveries, preparing NASA for the ongoing search for extraterrestrial life.

2018-2020

In the depths, we prevailed–successfully winning the urban phase of the DARPA SubT challenge.

We successfully tackled the DARPA SubT Challenge, an intensive and rigorous robotics competition that pushes the boundaries of robotic Al, autonomy, mapping, and complex environment exploration. In the systems track, our team, COSTAR, designed and deployed autonomy algorithms and physical Al solutions to navigate diverse subterranean settings, including caves, mines, energy facilities, and urban underground infrastructure, without any prior knowledge or maps of the environment.

We ventured into these challenging terrains, propelling our team to victory in the Urban Circuit of the DARPA SubT challenge in 2020. We achieved many significant first-of-its-kind results, including conducting the first fully autonomous many-kilometer exploration with any quadrupedal robot to date, and further showcasing fully autonomous multi-robot coordination (with up to 11 heterogeneous robots, legged, wheeled, drones) for inspection and search operations in complex environments.

2021-2022

We unlocked the autonomous potential of large vehicles in off-road environments, pushing the boundaries of physical AI.

As the next step in our journey toward full off-road autonomy, we took our autonomy solutions to the next level, applying them to heavy machinery and passenger-sized vehicles in fully off-road and complex environments and managing missions over ends of kilometers.

We have been a top performer in the DARPA RACER program where we accomplished a significant milestone, placing us as the first team to successfully complete all eight courses on our initial attempt in 2022. We traversed several kilometers with zero human intervention, fully autonomous with no GPS, without prior maps of the environment, and without existing trails, not even unpaved ones.

2023

We founded Field AI with the intention to use physical AI to build a better future for all.

Taking it to the next level and scale our solution, our visionary team established Field Al with a mission to revolutionize industrial operations through off-road autonomy. We are rapidly expanding.

As we forge ahead, we are reshaping the industrial landscape, pushing the boundaries of what is possible with robotic Al and with generating physically-grounded and uncertainty-aware Al models, and ushering in a future where robotic autonomy provides safety, productivity, and helpfulness to all.
